PRODUCTION TRENDS, Wine Export – Import in New Zealand

In 2007, I worked for the first time in New Zealand. I was impressed by the fastest improving New World wine industry. Most winemakers in New Zealand travel around the world and spend several harvests in America and Europe to learn new and old wine making technology. Then they usually return to New Zealand to become chef wine makers.

As you can see on the first graph in the last ten years the number of wineries in New Zealand is quite stable. There are around 700 wineries.

In 2012, New Zealand had 35,335 ha of wine grape area. From then on there has be continuous growth of plantation. Multi-national beverage companies invest and drive these changes.

Sauvignon Blanc is the most profitable variety. In 2015, the total vineyard area was 35,463 ha and 58 % of them was Sauvignon Blanc. By 2020, when New Zealand has 38,988 ha vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc reached 63 % of the total production area.
